Speaker Spotlight: Prof. Danilo A. Arao

The SOCCSKSARGEN Bloggers are excited to introduce the first of the fantastic speakers lined up for the SOCCSKSARGEN BlogFest 2010!
Prof. DANILO ARAÑA ARAO is the first of the BlogFest speakers, and will hold the talk on ‘Journalism Ethics for Bloggers’. Prof. Arao’s qualifications and experiences make more than the needed proof of his expertise on this very crucial issue for users of the New Media.
Prof. Arao is an assistant professor of the Department of Journalism at the University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication (UP CMC) in Diliman, Quezon City. He concurrently serves as UP CMC’s College Secretary.
He is a member of the Board of Editors of Bulatlat.com (a weekly online news magazine). He writes a column in Filipino (“Konteksto”) for Pinoy Weekly and another one in English (“Subtext”) for The Lobbyist. He also co-hosts and writes the script for the radio program “Sali Na, Bayan!” (DZUP 1602 khz, 2:00-3:00 p.m.) every Friday.
Prof. Arao is managing editor of the Philippine Journalism Review – the only refereed journal on journalism in Southeast Asia – published by the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR). He also serves as associate editor of the UP-based refereed journal Social Science Diliman.
From March 2009 to February 2010, he was on special detail as a visiting professor at Hannam University’s Linton Global College in Daejeon, South Korea.
Prior to teaching fulltime at UP, he was editor-in-chief (1994-1999) and head of research (2000-2001) of IBON Foundation, an independent research think-tank. He also taught Political Science part-time at the De La Salle University (DLSU) from 1993 to 1995.
Prof. Arao earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Communication (major in Journalism), cum laude, from UP Diliman and was adjudged Most Outstanding Journalism Student upon his graduation. He finished his Master of Arts (MA) in Philippine Studies, with High Distinction, at DLSU and was awarded a gold medal for academic excellence.
